Dumfries, Scotland in August 2021 - A scene photographed from Whitesands showing the caul (or cauld) on the Nith below New Bridge (built 1794). The caul was historically built with wooden stakes, but has been reconstructed many times over the years with timber logs and rubble. This scene show the weir looking towards the arched New Bridge. Nearby (downstream) is the old bridge or Devorgilla's Bridge one of the oldest bridges still in use in Scotland. The original wooden bridge here was built circa 1260. and was named after Dervorguilla de Balliol, mother of the Scottish King John Balliol.
