Asian Flood. 19th-century artwork of Asian animals and cities being overwhelmed by a catastrophic deluge or flood. Guided by the biblical story of a deluge, French science populariser Louis Figuier (1819-1894) divided recent prehistory into three periods: European floods, a glacial (Ice Age) period, and the creation of man and an Asian Flood. It was this Asian Flood, according to Figuier, that led to the story in the Bible. This Edouard Riou artwork is from Figuier's 'La Terre Avant Le Deluge' (The World before the Deluge, 1863).
