Margaret Burbidge, the first female president of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) meeting in Canberra, Australia, August 1973. Eleanor Margaret Burbidge (1919-2020) was a British-American observational astronomer and astrophysicist. She was one of the founders of stellar nucleosynthesis, worked on galaxy rotation curves and quasars, and helped develop the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope.
