Chaine des Puys, France. The Chaine des Puys, about 40 kilometers long, is a chain of 48 cinder cones, 8 lava domes and 15 maars (explosion craters) in central France, west of Clermont-Ferrand. The chaine is located on the Limagne Fault, related to formation of the Alps. The most recent eruption is thought to be 4040 BCE.
