Oil seed rape pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from an oil seed rape flower (Brassica napus). The outer wall (exine) of each grain is highly sculptured to improve its adherence to pollinating insects. Each grain has three furrows through which the pollen tube emerges at the time of germination. Each grain of pollen contains a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete) and initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x1050 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
