LURAY, Virginia, United States — The extensive cave system of Luray Caverns showcases diverse limestone formations created over millions of years. These caves, discovered in 1878, feature dramatic columns, stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone throughout their connected chambers. The caverns represent one of the most visited and well-preserved cave systems in the eastern United States.
Photograph by David Coleman. Luray Caverns, located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, represents one of America's most significant cave systems. Discovered by Andrew Campbell and companions in 1878, these limestone caves feature elaborate mineral formations created through the slow deposition of calcium carbonate over millions of years. The cavern system includes multiple connected chambers adorned with towering columns, delicate stalactites, massive stalagmites, and flowing stone draperies. The caves maintain a constant temperature of 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12°C) year-round and continue to be active, with formations growing at the rate of approximately one cubic inch per century. The caverns' limestone foundations were laid down during the Tertiary period, with subsequent groundwater activity carving out the extensive network of underground rooms and passages that visitors explore today.
