James Simpson Chester Wells received hisearly education in the public schools of his nativecity, and afterwards took a course at the BrooklynPolytechnic Institute, fitting himself for the Schoolof Mines of Columbia. He graduated from thelatter Institution in 1875, and immediately on hisgraduation was appointed Assistant in AnalyticalChemistry. He held this position for four yearswhen he was given his present position in the Uni-versity. Mr. Wells married in 1883 Alice Jacob-son. They have one child, Josephine Aikens is not bound by the trammels of partisan alle-giance, supporting always the best man for publicoffice irrespective of party. He is a member ofthe London Chemical Society, the Society of Chem-ical Industry and the Deutsche ElectrochemischeGesellschaft and other scientific societies.
