General Dumourier, French soldier and politician, 1845. General Dumouriez, (anglicised to Dumourier, 1739-1823), won the decisive battle of Valmy against the German and Austrian armies. He also won the battle of Jemmapes, and conquered Belgium. He then deserted the army of the Republic for the Royalists on 5th April 1793, and was only prevented by accident from betraying his troops into the hands of the enemy. He settled in England.
