Two fragmental ventral shields with associated trunk scales and tails: that on the left is a cast with the dorsal shield possibly attached on the reverse; that on the right is an external cast. The scales of the specimen on the right occur on a plane perpendicular to that of the shield but are shown above as rotated to be on the same plane. Scale = 10 mm. (nmc 21769a, 21769b.) Ctenaspis russelli sp. nov. Figs. 4, 5 Holotype nmc 21702 Dorsal shield. The species is named in honour of Dr. Loris S. Russell. Occurrence Early Devonian (Gedinnian-?Siegenian). Sandstone-carbonate facies of the Peel Sound Formation. Northern part of Prince of Wales Island, , Locality B. Referred Material NMC21703,21781 to21855. Diagnosis A very large Ctenaspis with dorsal shield about 60 mm long and 50 mm wide, rostral margin with row of coarse tubercles, and lateral brims very coarsely serrate. Tubercles round and low. Ventral shield deep, lateral margins subparallel, rather square cornual angles and broadly V-shaped posterior margin: ornamentation of very coarse rounded and posteriorly directed tubercles. Description The dorsal shield of this large species is relatively broad, the width ratio being about It is also relatively flat. The orbits are far forward, the orbital ratio is about ; and the very large and prominent pineal is placed well back ( Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Churcher, C.
