The white-faced glossy ibis is one of the few species of the herontribe that are considered by law as game birds, and it is so consideredin the United States in California only. Here it has an open seasonfrom October 15 to March 1, except in game district 6 (comprisingthe southern counties), where the season opens October 1. The bag-limit is 20 birds in any one day and all sale within the State or ship-ment without the State is prohibited. In all but three of the other States where the white-faced glossyibis oecurs it is protected by law for the most part under the pro-visions of the general law that protects all but certain specifiedgame birds. In Nevada, Kansas, and New Mexico, however, thespecies is not protected by law at any time in the year. The habitat of the white-faced glossy ibis presents one of the bestexamples of a discontinuous range. The bird is apparently absentfrom the whole of Central America and from northern South Amer-ica and the valley of the Amazon River. To the northward it rangesfrom latitude 18° to 44°, while south of the equator the range extendsfrom 12° to 55°.
