Members of Sgt. James Strickland's family visit with Durward Swanson (right) during the dedication ceremony of Strickland's memorial marker Dec. 4, 2016, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Strickland was killed near the memorial marker by Japanese gunfire during the attack on Pearl Harbor and Oahu Dec. 7, 1941. Swanson was with Strickland during his final moments, and has visited his grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific for the past 10 years.
