On the eve of the Battle of Montes Claros in 1635 the 1st Marquis of Marialva and 3rd Earl of Cantanhede made a vow that if they won the battle they would build a convent dedicated to St Peter of Alcantara in Lisbon. The Convent was founded in 1670 and Royal approval was given for the installation of the Capuchin Franciscan friars.
