Below-knee leg amputation. Sequence of artworks illustrating an operation to amputate a leg below the knee. At upper left is the surgeon making incisions at the site of amputation. At upper centre, the skin flap is folded back and retained for future use when fitting a prosthesis. At upper right, a circumferential incision is made and the tibia and fibula are sawed off and the nerves and blood vessels are tied off. At lower centre, the soft-tissue flap is turned over the bone stumps and sutured to the anterior (frontal) wound edge. A drainage tube is left in place, emerging through the closed incision. At lower right, the post-surgical X-ray shows the bone stumps.
