Biological control research. Entomologists examining a papaya (Carica papaya) fruit trap containing oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) eggs parasitised by Biosteres arisanus wasp larvae. Fruit flies are a destructive agricultural pest. By developing means to destroy them using natural biological predators, the amount of chemicals sprayed on the crops can be reduced. Some wasp species lay their eggs inside fruit fly eggs. When the wasp larvae hatch, they grow inside the developing fruit fly and eventually kill it. This research was carried out for the United States Department of Agriculture in Honolulu, Hawaii.
