Castello del Buonconsiglio, Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: detail of fresco by Marchello Fogolino (c. 1484 - 1558) on an external wall of the Castelvecchio, the nucleus of the castle and its most ancient part. Castello del Buonconsiglio, originally designed for military and defensive purposes, was the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Trento from the second half of the 1200s up to secularisation of the Principality in 1803. The Castelvecchio dates back to the beginning of the 1200s. Marchello Fogolino (also Fagolino and Figolino) was a Venetian painter and draughtsman, first recorded working in 1519 in Vicenza where he was a pupil of Montagna. He was exiled from Venetian territory in 1526 after a murder charge and was last recorded in Trento in 1548. Charles the Great or Charlemagne (747 - 814) was, King of the Franks, King of the Lombards and Holy Roman Emperor. He was born near Liège in modern Belgium, son of Frankish king Pepin the Short. He expanded his Frankish kingdom and conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in northern Italy. In 800, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III as thanks for aid against a rebellion. The immense territories which Charlemagne controlled became known as the Carolingian empire.
