Terra Nova Antarctic exploration. Motor mechanic Bernard Day (1884-1934) and another expedition member with a motor sledge in 1911 passing Inaccessible Island during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific observations. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 landed at Cape Evans and spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott's attempt to reach the South Pole began on 1 November 1911. He and four others died in 1912 on their return journey from the Pole. Photograph by Herbert George Ponting.
