Wide periodic table, colour-coded for electron shells. The periodic table shows the chemical elements ordered by atomic number (number of protons in the nucleus), but arranged in rows (periods) so that elements with similar chemistry occur in the same vertical column (group). This is the wide periodic table, which shows the lanthanoids and actinoids (both blue) in their proper place. Here, the colours show the blocks formed by the elements with their outer electrons in the same electron shell: s-block (red), d-block (yellow), p-block (green), f-block (blue). It is these outer electrons that determine an element's chemical properties. Here, helium has been placed in the s-block rather than with the noble gases. Each element is represented by its chemical symbol. Above each symbol is the element's atomic number, and below it is the atomic weight, and the element's name.
