Signal Hill, reflecting in the waters of the Alfred Basin, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa
Signal Hill, at the haunches of the Lion's Head, is a backdrop to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, where a moored fishing boat and quayside lifting cranes are testimony to a continuing commercial use. Signal Hill is so-named after the signal flags giving notice of approaching ships. It also signalled weather warnings and anchoring instructions to ships preparing for stormy weather. The hill, at 350 m (1148 feet) is a modern venue for paragliders. At Noon, each day, a gun operated by the South African Navy may startle unknowing visitors with its time call. Big, coastal defence guns, stationed at the summit in World War 2, were moved to Robben Island because their vibration and noise damaged surrounding houses.
