An information board at the south end of the bridge, near the Toll Plaza, is entitled 'Art Deco on a Grand Scale' and reads: 'The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world's largest examples of the Art Deco style. Named for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925, the Art Deco style was used by architect Irving Morrow to add aesthetic touches throughout the Bridge. These include chevron or beveled shapes and an expression of verticality.' Another information board, entitled 'How the Bridge Spans the Golden Gate' mentions: 'All the weight of the roadway and sidewalk deck structure, the traffic, suspender ropes and the self-weight of the curving main cables is placed on the tops of the bridge's two towers by the cables ... the towers carry all the gravity loads of the entire suspension structure, from end to the other, down to the ground.' A third information board says: 'Only rarely must the Golden Gate Bridge withstand earthquakes or strong wind, but everyday it must fight corrosion of the steel.' The Bridge engineers, in anticipation of the weakening effects of rust, over-sized the steel sections of the Bridge. Nowadays, different areas of the Bridge are re-painted about every ten to twenty years. Due to environmental concerns, today's primer paint contains zinc rather than lead. Zinc protects the steel because it corrodes more easily than steel. On top of the zinc primer is a top coat of paint in the Golden Gate Bridge's signature colour, called 'International Orange'. Other colour schemes were considered when the Bridge was built, including a black and yellow striped design to make it more visible to ships and aeroplanes. The roadway, although strengthened and stiffened by an underlying steel truss, needs the suspender ropes, seen in the shot, to pull the weight of the roadway up to the main cables. The steel towers are also strengthened by having an internal cellular structure. Fog portrait from the
