Laparoscopic appendectomy. Close-up of surgeons inserting a Veress needle to commence a laparoscopic appendectomy. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique where instruments are inserted into the abdomen through a small incision, in this case through the umbilicus. A Veress needle is used to inflate the peritoneal cavity (a pneumoperitoneum) to aid the surgery. The assistant is using towel clips to elevate the abdominal wall. An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, a small finger-shaped branch of the large intestine. This is usually done when the appendix is inflamed (appendicitis).
