And that is also just the distinctionbetween a good and a poor photographic or telescopiclens. Professor Abbe also introduced the svstem ofoil immersion and other great microscopic improve- 2o6 Seen in Germany ments. Indeed, he may be justly called the fatherof the modern microscope. From the inv^estigations begun thus in a laboratoryby Professor Abbe and Dr. Schott, have sprung twogreat manufacturing plants, separate and yet allied,. Putting Crucible into Cooling Furnace neither of which is able to keep up with the presentdemand for its product. We visited the SchottWorks on the hill above Jena, where all the newvarieties of glass are made, and afterwards, at theCarl-Zeiss Optical Works, we saw this glass groundand polished with infinite care and precision intolenses and prisms. A New Industry Created 207 Both of these business institutions, founded onscientific investigation, still continue their scientificwork. The lens manufactory has no fewer thantwenty scientists on its staff, and the glass workshas five, all thoroughly schooled investigators andmostly university doctors. These men devote theirentire time and attention to experimenting alongchemical, optical, mathematical, and technical lines, seeking to discover new processes and establish newprinciples which will be of value in the business. Inthis way the whole institution is kept on a thoroughlyscientific basis and in the foremost van of
