Peter and Douglas Gould begin the back-breaking saffron harvest, picking saffron from a million crocus plants in their two-and-a-half acre field in the Delamere Forest near Frodsham, Cheshire. The brothers expect to pick a total of 1kg of the flower stigmas this autumn. Selling at £20 a gram (from 200 flowers), saffron spice is one of the most expensive plant products in the world. Plant Biologist and keen cook, Peter, first experimented growing saffron at his parentsÕ house before falling in love with the spice and planting 320,000 plants and setting up Cheshire Saffron in 2015. The saffron crocus blooms in the autumn and is related to the more common spring flower. After separating the three red stigmas from each flower the saffron is stored in jars for a few months to allow to mature. The company sells to fine-dining restaurants and to the public.
