In geothermally active areas hot water and sulfuric acid dissolve and liquefy rock. The mud or clays are coloured by the chemicals in the rock and may, when water levels are high create liquid pots of mud that vary in colour according to their location. Icelandic mud pots tend to be blue grey due to iron sulfur and silica. Here the water table is lower and the mud has solidified and started to crack. Iceland.
