Leon Batttista Alberti (1404-1472) was an Italian architect, theorist, sculptor, painter, archaeologist and writer of the early renaissance. He designed some of the most visionary buildings of the 15c including the church of S. Maria Novella and the Palazzo Rucellai in Florence. He incorporated in them classical features of the Roman ruins of which he had made a systematic archaeological study His De Re Aedificatoria, a comprehensive ten-volume masterpiece on renaissance and classical architecture, was the first printed book on architecture and the first architectural treatise to appear since that of Vitruvius in classical antiquity, and its effect on architects was as wide and fundamental as Vitruvius' had been.
