Schimp. grows in dense mats like a very coarse velvet. It is found in wet places particularly at the foot of trees in swamps, growing on the ground rather than the tree. It is also common at the base of wet cliffs and on wet rocks where a little soil has collected. The leaves are different from those of any of the other species and are easily recog- nized when mounted, by the shape and the hair- like apex.
