Only the monarch was too astute apolitician not to recognize that there was a riskof jeopardizing vital interests of his own in con-firming to the Admiral the great privileges thathad been conceded. DonFernando strongly desired to compose the con-flicting interests of the monarchy and the Ad-miral by awarding him some compensation, butthe latter would not make even the smallest con-cession in respect of his rights. In the midst ofthis controversy, Columbus was overtaken bydeath, in an inn at Valladolid, on the 20th ofMay, 1506. In the meantime the great fame of Veraguasriches had spread abroad, propagated by Colum-bus himself and by his companions.
