Indian paint fungus, Echinodontium tinctorium, growing on a fallen grand fir, Abies grandis, along Alvord Lake, east of Troy, Montana. This mushroom has a deep red/orange flesh. Members of certain Native American tribes applied this mushroom to their skin to prevent chapping. Its red flesh was also used as a pigment, most particularly for war paint. Recent scientific tests have demonstrated potent immuno-stimulatory, anti-inflammatory, and cancer cell growth inhibitory activity using extracts from this mushroom. Past scientific synonyms of this mushroom include Fomes tinctorius, Hydnum tinctorium, Scindalma tinctorium, Hydnofomes tinctorius. Kingdom: Fungi Division: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Russulales Family: Echinodontiaceae Genus: Echinodontium Species: E. tinctorium
