On November , 1829, the last pieceof the statue, comprising the bust, etc.,was raised to the summit. The monument stands in an open spacetwo hundred feet square, appropriatelynamed after the home of Washington,Mt. Vernon Place. It is surrounded bysplendid private residences, and two publicbuildings, the Peabody Institute, and theMt. Vernon Methodist RtKGELY MONUMENT. MONUMENTS OF THE -MONUMENTAL CITY. The height of the monumentabove the ground is 188 feet andabove the tide ^88 feet. The statueis sixteen feet, and is wrought inthree separate pieces from oneblock of thirty-six tons, each blockweighing about five and a half tonswhen completed. It was elevatedsuccessfully, by means of a pair ofspars, attached to the cap of thecolumn, by pulleys and a statue is the work of Causici,and represents Washington in theState House at Annapolis, Decem-ber 23d, 1783, at the moment whenhe resigned his commission. Themonument is a stately Doric columnof white marble. The base is fiftyfeet square and twenty-four feethigh. The number of steps tothe gallery surmounting the columnis 220.
