The object of the bye-pass, shown around the mainsluice, was in order to equalise the pressure of the water on both sides ofthe sluice, otherwise the great pressure on one side only would preventits being opened. A draining sluice was fixed in front of the safety-valveand main sluice for the purpose of emptying the pipes when necessary,and the spring safety-valve discharged into the same drain.
