Some of their small frigotts lay to leward oftheir line, with the same signall colours their flag ships had;which Admirall Byngjudged the use of to be, that if in time ofaction the smoak shoud be so great that their line coud not seethe signalls from the flag ships, the fleet might observe them fromthese frigatts lying at a distance, by repeating the signalls made;and which disposition he has thought might be of great use inlarge fleets where the line is much extended. As the French laywith their heads to the southward, their white and blue squadronled the van: in the center was the Count of Toulouse, HighAdmirall of France, with the white ; and in the rear was theblue ; each squadron having an admirall with vice and rearadmiralls, being 9 in all, besides some cheifs of squadrons.
