The Chartist Riot in Newport, Wales, 4th November 1839. The Chartists were a working-class movement in Britain whose demands included democracy and the right to vote with a secret ballot. Here they are seen attacking the Westgate Hotel in an attempt to free fellow chartists who had been arrested and held there by the police. Illustration from Cassell's History of England, Vol VII.
