For the successful cultivation of this root the soil should be light (sandy loam is best, enriched the previous year with manure) and deeply tilled. For an early crop the Seed should be sown as early as the ground can be properly worked. For later crops it may be sown any time until about the middle of June. Be careful to compress the soil over the Seed after sowing. Sow in rows about 15 inches apart, or for field culture 1% to 2 feet apart, covering the Seed about one-half to one inch deep. Keep down weeds. Thin out young plants as soon as they can be handled, leaving them about 4 inches apart. 1 oz. to 100 feet of drill; 3 to 4 lbs. per acre in drills.
