The impressive curved disused Smardale Gill Viaduct (designed by Sir Thomas Bouch) lies on the former Stainmore railway. The viaduct is managed by the Northern Viaduct Trust. The valley and former railway is a nature reserve, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve and managed by the Cumbria Wildlife
