Neck and chest bones, computer artwork. At centre is the spine. The cervical (neck) spine is blue and the thoracic (upper) spine is green. The spinal column is made up of vertebrae, block-like bones that protect the spinal cord and support the upper body. The first two vertebrae, the atlas and axis, form the joint with the skull. The projections from the vertebrae are the attachment sites for muscles. The ribcage is made up of twelve pairs of curved bones that attach to the thoracic spine at the back and the sternum (breastbone, not seen) at the front.
