Friedrich von Frerichs (1819-1885). 1889 engraving of the German ophthalmologist and pathologist Friedrich Theodor von Frerichs. Von Frerichs is best known as the founder of experimental clinical medicine and for his research of kidney and liver diseases. He was the first to identify the three primary stages of Bright's disease and performed pioneering research into multiple sclerosis.
