HENRY W. LAWTON: A SKETCH OF HIS LONG SERVICE. BY GEN. O. O. GEN. nENUY W. LAWTON. HENRY ^y. LAWTON was born in Ohio,the native State of Grant, Sherman. Sher-idan, McFherson, and a host of other was but eighteen years of age, workingon a farm near the Indiana border, when theCivil War began. The Ninth Indiana was raisedin the vicinity of Fort \Vayne A company (E)of that regiment was organized upon the veryfirst call for volunteers in the neighl)orlioodwhere young Lawton was at work. He enlistedat once (April 18, 1861) and was chosen firstsergeant of the company. This was a threemonths regiment, but was speedily called toWest Airginia for considerable active work dur-ing its short tern^. Lawton was mustered out with his regimenton July 29, 1861. Twenty-two days after thatthe governor, recognizing -his genius for leader- ship, gave him a first lieutenants commission inthe Thirtieth Indiana, just then being a little over a month—on October 11, 1861—we find this regiment crossing the
