'Mad Jack' Fuller's Sugar Loaf Folly, near Woods Corner, East Sussex, UK

The Sugar Loaf, a spire like structure on the horizon, was built as a result of a drunken bet with a friend. Fuller put money on his claim that he could see Dallington Church from his home. On returning to his house, he found he could not see the spire, so he built the Sugar Loaf overnight to prove himself right. The structure got its name from the traditional storage of sugar which used to come in cone shaped containers called loaves. John Fuller, better known as 'Mad Jack' Fuller, b1757-d1834, was an MP and Squire of Brightling, who built several eccentric follies in East Sussex
