BECK'S COLUMBUS MELON. THE NEW COLUMBUS MELON. This new Muskmelon originated with Mr. Anton Beck, of Illinois, and is strikingly dis- tinct in shape, color, and general markings. Our illustration shows the correct form ; it is almost entirely free from ribs or seams. The beautiful buff skin is covered with a very thick, whitish netting ; the flesh is light green, very solid and thick, even at the blossom end, leaving only a small seed cav- ity. The melons never burst open at either end, hence they can be safely shipped long distances in barrels and boxes. Its attractive appearance in- sures ready sale on the market, while its good table qualities will sustain continued demand. It ripens with the Hackensack, is a heavy yielder and long keeper. The vines are strong and thrifty, and the melons, even if left on the vines a week after they are ripe and ready to pick, still retain their good quality.
