Biomesh repair of a hernia. Close-up of an open, infected abdominal wound showing biologic mesh (biomesh, yellow) used to repair an incisional hernia. The edges of the surgical wound include necrotic subcutaneous fat (black), with skin mottling also present. Biomesh is a type of surgical mesh made from an organic biomaterial. This is intended to increase compatibility with body tissues and reduce the chances of the mesh being rejected by the body's immune system. A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the abdominal wall.
