The first superconducting magnet for the HERA collider, produced at DESY , the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg, in late 1983. HERA (Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator) is a new design of machine which will collide 820 GeV protons (which belong to the group of particles known as hadrons) with 30 GeV electrons. Its underground ring is km long. Currently under construction, it is scheduled to start operations in 1989-1990.
