Farther on the works are in progress right down to the mouth of theRio Tolten, with various branch lines following between Valdivia and PuertoMontt. At the end of 1891 the total length of the system exceeded 680 miles,representing an outlay of £11,500,000. The whole system belongs to the Govern-ment, which has also acquired the Chafiaral line in the northern mineral region. 474 SOUTH AMERICA—THE ANDES REGIONS. All the oilier northern lines owe their existence to the mining industry, andare due to private enterprise. The most costly runs from Antofugusta up to theBolivian plateaux, the section within Chilian territory being about 270 miles nitrate lines terminating at Pisagua, Iquique and Patiilos have a joint lengthof 240 miles; those of the Copiapo copper-mining district over 1-JO miles.
