Papaver somniferum, is the plant from which opium and poppy seeds (used in baking) are obtained. Opium is the source of many narcotics, including morphine (and its derivative heroin), thebaine, codeine, papaverine, and noscapine. The scientific name means the "sleep-bringing poppy".
