Shown here is a lava tube opening at the Pohakuloa Training Area. Early Hawai'ians are believed to have used the lava tubes for shelter and other uses while passing through the area. The Army spends millions of dollars annually to meet its stewardship obligations here on the Island of Hawaii, which include preservation of natural and cultural resources.
