The original fire station in thislocation stood on part of the site of the Central fire house. It wasoccupied by the Hook and Ladder, City Hose and Lawrence Protectivecompanies, the last named being disbanded in 1853. In 1854 thebuilding was removed to Amesbury street, in the rear of the FirstBaptist church, where it remained until 1864. Then it was removedto a lot near the corner of Concord and Franklin streets, when it wasenlarged and used for fire purposes until the present brick fire housewas erected ) -eno!, f A GROUP OF FIRE HOUSES 90 IvAWRENCE YESTERDAY AND TODAY Prior to i860 none of the engine houses were provided with hosetowers worthy to be termed such. They were occasionally heated bybox stoves in cold weather, and were provided with small bell first hook and ladder truck purchased by the town was a crudeaffair of light construction, with a small number of ladders of mediumlength, a few hooks, axes and lanterns. The City Hose carriage was atwo-wheel alTair, capable of carrying 500 feet of hose and manned bya company of 10 members.
