Well dressings are made, firstly, by by placing clay onto previously water soaked wooden boards. Secondly, a paper pattern containing that year's design is placed on top of the clay and the design is transferred to the clay by pricking the shapes through the paper. The design is then outlined with wool, sweet corn or cones. Lastly, the design is built up using mosses, lichens and leaves followed by flower petals to add the variouse colours to the picture. This is a delicate and time consuming task using fingers, tweezers and nail scissors. The petals and leaves are laid like tiles on a roof, starting at the bottom, so that the rain runs off.
