This process was replaced with hand clamp on ac-count of its obvious faults, namely, besides being aone-purpose process it was laborious work driving *Jas. L. Taylor Mff. Co., Poughkeepsie, and removing the wedges, the workman wastingenergy in alternately stooping over his work andtravelling back and forth to the glue pot, and finallyowing to the percentage of open joints resulting frompressure applied only at the centre of length of hand clamp while they permitted of wider variet-ies of production and fatigued the operator less, stillretained many of the disadvantages possessed by thewedge method. Development of Dovetail JointsWith these difficulties in mind an ingenious in-ventor produced a combination jointing and gluingmachine which automatically machined a tapereddovetail in one piece of wood and a tapered tongue. Power driven clamp carrier in factory of Langslow, Limited, Cobourg. Ont. in the other, applied the glue automatically and, by asliding motion, forced the two pieces together, thusgradually building up the panel to about the widthdesired, when it passed through the sizing saw to be 08 Canadian Woodworker and Furniture Manufacturer trimmed to the exact width. This machine was abig time saver over any that preceded it and althoughv n y expensive was rapidly installed in one factoryafter another. Soon however, its disadvantages began to be ap-parent. The machine was very complicated, requir-ing one highly specialized operator, not easily replace-able, with two assistants to run it. If the glue was notof the proper consistency it was either pushed out ofthe joint w hen gluing hard wood or was absorbed intothe soft wood leaving none in the joint in either order to play safe 3/8 to y2 in width of lumberhad to be sacrificed to the dovetail in each
