He wasan unsuccessful candidate for lieu-tenant-governor of his adoptedstate in 1857, and took part inthe senatorial canvass in Illinoisbetween Douglas, and Lincoln,making his first political speech in English, whichwas widely circulated as a campaign next established himself in the practice of law atMilwaukee, but made many electioneering toursthroughout the country. He was a member of thenational republican convention of 1860, and hadgreat influence in shaping its platform, particularlythat part which related to the citizens of foreignbirth. In the subsequent campaign he spoke bothin English and German, and when Mr. Lincoln be-came president, Schurz was sent as minister to Spain,but resigned his post in December, 1861, to enter the. He distinguishedhimself at the second battle of Bull Run, and wascommissioned major-general of volunteers on March14, 1863, and had command of a division of O. corps and took part in the battles of Chan-cellorsville (May 3, 1863), Gettysburg, Fredericks-burg and Chattanooga.
