Threave Castle situated on an island mid-stream in the River Dee and bell and sign to summon the seasonal custodian to transport visitors by rowing boat across the thin stretch of water to the castle. The thirteenth century stronghold of the notorious and ill-liked 'Black Douglasses' before their imminent demise.
