Bearslightly to the left near a boundary wall, and keeping the main pathyou will climb to the Windy post (or Beckamoor Cross), whence it is§ m.—over a runnel—into the main road near its highest point(1,075 ft.) between Tavistock and Merrivale, all but 4 m. fromTavistock. The first mile is a stiff ascent, the next comparatively level;then, from cross-roads, the climbing begins again. A splendidretrospect reveals itself, including the conical Brent Tor, Kit Hill,Saltash Bridge, and Tavistock. We are now fairly among the. SKETCH PLAN OF MERRIVALE ANTIQUITIES V . « - Lonnatone/ £ Scale or Tarda s^p .cj(tm&tofarde) tors. The first is Cox Tor (1,452 ft.), north of the road, andbeyond it the line of Staple Tors. The most remarkable tor hereabout is Vixen Tor, which rises alittle below the level of the road \ m. south. It has been likened tothe Sphinx, but it presents a different appearance from almost everypoint. It can only be ascended by squeezing oneself up a narrowrift or rake in it. From either top or bottom there is a pretty peepinto the wooded Walkham valley. On the top are 3 rock basins. Staple Tor (1,482 ft.), with its gatepost-like rocks, commands afine view. The loftiest of the rocks is said only to need the weightof a person on its summit to enable it to be slightly moved.
