The voicing of the organ hasbeen carefully carried out to suit the accoustic pro-perties of the church, and, while there are several verybeautiful individual stops, the general build up oftone is very artistic and well balanced. And so the various transitions have been traced asindicated at the outset. Long may those who leadthe praise of God in Lothian Road be imbued not onlywith musical ability, but with the true spirit of praise,love and gratitude to Pulpit and Organ IX A CHAPTER OF STATISTICS In the commercial world the merchant reckons whetherhe has been progressing or receding by means of figures,and some will be anxious to apply the same test to achurch. To most people statistics are dry, and sothey are collected in a convenient form to be passedover if desired. The spiritual life of a congregationshould not be reckoned by figures, however, eitheras showing membership or subscriptions. The formertest would place Lothian Road in the foremost placein the Church, but the latter would give it avery mediocre position. A large congregation maybe spiritually dead, while the subscriptions of a smallcongregation may represent a very large percentage ofthe surplus income of its members which is left afterdeducting the sums required to meet the necessaries oflife, and still the total sums may be small.
